Abstract:
The article focuses on monolithic domes, which are designed to withstand natural disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes. According to David South, dome dweller and head of Monolithic Constructors, Inc. in Texas, the one-piece building meet or exceed U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) guidelines that suggest “near-absolute protection” against natural disasters. Ernst Kiesling, professor of civil engineering at the Texas Tech Wind Science and Engineering Research Center, says that the dome shape is particularly favorable for minimizing wind forces.
